It’s March 28th, 2017 and I just finished watching a 60 Minutes episode on the Kern Valley fire from 2016. This fire as some remember became a raging inferno due to both drought conditions and strong winds. What struck me was how important it has become for home owners to create a “defensible space” around their home for just such an event. Kern Valley might not have been in our neighborhood, however, the 2016 Loma fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains was. Studies have been done revealing clearly how homes are ignited by flying embers as things like dry brush and debris sit on rooftops and fill rain gutters like kindling. The 60 Minutes program also referenced situations where the only homes that had survived were those that indeed had the recommended “defensible space.” I was amazed to even hear from professional fire fighters that they often had to judge if they even had a chance to save a home based on the defensible space around that home. Both their success and safety would be rooted in this judgment and could determine whether a home could be protected in a fire situation. As we head into the 2017 fire season here in Santa Cruz County I would strongly urge home owners to make every effort to insure that their home is protected. Cal-Fire has comprised serval list that walk you through the steps on how to create a “Defensible Space.” Number two on the list includes roof and gutter cleaning.
