Well it’s 2019 and California is once again entering wildfire season. 2018 was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire season on record in California. The Carr Fire, Woolsey Fire, Complex Fire and of course the Camp Fire were just a few of the deadly fires that ravaged our State. Watching the images play out on both live TV as well as social media was at times overwhelming. I will never forget watching a“60 Minutes” episode on the Kern Valley fire from 2016. This fire was one that many remember because of the sheer intensity caused by both strong winds and drought conditions. The documentary was very well made and involved interviews from veteran fire fighters as well as other experts. What struck me the most was just how important it was for home owners to create a “defensible space” around their home. Studies have been done revealing clearly how homes are ignited by flying embers as things like dry brush and debris sit on rooftops and fill rain gutters like kindling. The 60 Minutes program also referenced situations where the only homes that had survived were those that indeed had the recommended “defensible space.” I was amazed to even hear from professional fire fighters that they often had to make a split decision as to whether or not a home could be saved based on the defensible space around that home. Both the success and safety of the fire fighters would be rooted in this judgment and could determine whether a home could or would be protected in a fire situation. As we head into the 2019 fire season here in Santa Cruz County I would strongly urge home owners to make every effort to heed Cal-Fires instructions and ensure that their home is protected.
